River drone in the dronfield eye magazine
Did you read the story in the latest edition of the dronfield eye (january 09 page 3) what are you views on this is the river neglected ?
I think it is as there are some members of our community seem to use it as a dumping ground dumping everything from bicycles to washing machines and everything in between in the river
This river could become a valuable recreational facility within the town with trout fishing river side walks and the local schools could use it for nature studies

Yep fell in that river a few times myself as a kid, I would like to see it preserved for future kids to fall in.

Re: River drone in the dronfield eye magazine
it's very smelly in places. I too am dismayed at the amount of rubbish dumped, but there again, it isn't just the river that suffers from this. Clean-ups have worked over the years for the River Don, a volunteer project might just work here?

Totally agree - maybe we could get some more support on this issue and get an action group going - should we put an appeal out on the home news page? Let us know your views. For an area where many people are proud to live its a shame to have such an eye sore and something which is a health hazard.

Re: River drone in the dronfield eye magazine
looking on the wild trout trust website the trout in the town project is just what we need in dronfield
What is it?
Trout
in the Town is a new WTT initiative funded by the Esmée Fairbairn
Foundation. Its objectives are to improve the quality of river habitat
in urban areas for the benefit of trout and wider biodiversity, and to
raise awareness of wild trout as a totem species for clean water and
living rivers. This will be achieved through the formation of local
community groups who will adopt their local urban stream. As
a result, conservation action groups, angling clubs, schools and all
interested parties can come together to champion these urban wildlife
corridors. Reconnecting communities with the streams of their towns and
cities will bring reciprocal sociological benefits. There’s no better
biology classroom than the natural world and there’s no better way to
strengthen communities than to be united in a common cause. It’s a
chance to do something wonderful and have it given back plus interest.

Hi Craig, 10am on Friday 8th May is good for us too. Can I suggest the Manor House Hotel as an appropriate meeting place?

Yes, we must preserve this site; it is a valuable asset to our community and could be a haven for wild life and relaxation. It is now an embarrasing mess in parts. We can do better.

Re: River drone in the dronfield eye magazine
Great news, the civic society are as I type this wading along the river clearing up the mess at last, so well done to one and all. It's a pity the river authority couldn't do even though they have surveyed on many occasions.
Re: River drone in the dronfield eye magazine
Mrs Smithy and I walked along parts of the Drone at the weekend, I think it gets a tad whiffy when it leaves Unstone Green and flows towards Sheepbridge. Just past the Sandpiper, it is often blue tinged and sort of toiletty.
